The baddest car on the street was born in 1970, and underwent some modernization in 1973, 1978 and 1981. The fourth generation was produced up until 1988. Production of the Monte Carlo SS went on hiatus until 1995, when the fifth generation sprang to life.
From 95-99 there was no "SS", however the Z34 served a similar cosmetic purpose and they then became front-wheel drive. The Z34 burst into the scene pushing 210 horsepower and 215 ft•lbf of torque, and finished out the 90's with 200 horsepower and 225 ft•lbf of torque. Not too bad for a V6!
In 2000, the car was revamped yet again. GM decided to kick the look of the Lumina, and reflect on the beasts of the past. Per request of racing teams, GM added the hump (scoop) to the rear end and brought back the Super Sport moniker. Through 2005, the engine pushed at a constant 200 horsepower and 225 ft•lbf of torque, whereas the SS Supercharged raced along the street with 240 hp and 280 ft•lb of torque.
Finally in 2006, the Monte Carlo received its final makeover. The Impala became the companion, as opposed to the Lumina, and received a modernized cosmetic update. The engine was upgraded to a 5.3L V8 and cranked out the power. The Super Sport raised a few eyebrows, as it made 303 hp and 323 ft•lb of torque and remained front wheel drive.
